Saudi Arabia announced the success of the global initiative to regulate e-waste that has been implemented in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in three countries: Paraguay, Rwanda, and Zambia. The initiative reinforces the Kingdom’s leadership in advancing global digital sustainability efforts and accelerating the transition toward greener practices through regulatory frameworks that promote the circular economy and deliver innovative solutions to reduce e-waste, paving the way for a more sustainable digital future. The announcement was made on the sidelines of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, with the participation of over 190 countries.
The initiative delivered three national regulatory frameworks for circular economy management, alongside a specialized guide documenting international best practices and regulatory policies for e-waste management. It also included studies to estimate implementation costs and assess potential fees on electronic devices in the beneficiary countries. More than 270 organizations and over 480 public and private sector experts from around the world contributed to the initiative.
Since joining the ITU in 1949, Saudi Arabia has harnessed its expertise and capabilities to support the union and the international community in shaping the future of the sector. The Kingdom continues to advance an inclusive, intelligent, and sustainable digital future by driving digital regulatory innovation, promoting the adoption of AI and emerging technologies, strengthening human capacity, facilitating knowledge transfer, and advancing the circular economy.
