HOUSTON — Cape Verde completed one of the greatest underdog stories of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stage after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia secured a place in the round of 32.
The African debutants finished second in Group H with three points after drawing all three group matches — against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia — to qualify behind group winners Spain, who defeated Uruguay 1-0.
With a population of just over 500,000, Cape Verde is the smallest country ever to advance beyond the World Cup group stage.
“We are small,” veteran goalkeeper Vozinha said. “But we have big hearts and we are fighters.”
Cape Verde will now face defending champion Argentina in the round of 32 on July 3 in Miami.
The Blue Sharks’ remarkable campaign was built on defensive resilience, with 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha once again producing a standout display to frustrate Saudi Arabia.
He denied Mohamed Kanno in first-half stoppage time, tipped away a powerful effort from Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat midway through the second half, and preserved the clean sheet with a stoppage-time save from Abdullah Al-Hamdan.
“There is a lot of quality in our national team,” Vozinha said. “Maybe many people think Cape Verdean players are not good enough. But we came here to show that we have quality, we are here to compete and our players can play at the highest level.”
Saudi Arabia, needing victory to keep its knockout hopes alive, pushed throughout but failed to find a breakthrough despite an improved performance following its heavy defeat to Spain.
Mohammed Al-Owais also made several important saves for the Green Falcons, including denying Laros Duarte in the 74th minute, while Kevin Pina and Nuno da Costa both came close for Cape Verde.
The final whistle initially left qualification hanging in the balance before celebrations erupted moments later when Spain completed its victory over Uruguay, confirming Cape Verde’s historic progression.
Coach Bubista, draped in his country’s flag after the match, praised his players for defying expectations.
“The team was very eager to show this to the whole world,” he said. “We are proud to have reached this stage. We have shown that we are a small country, but we fight for everything we want to achieve.”
Cape Verde had already stunned the football world by holding European champion Spain to a goalless draw before recovering from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Uruguay.
On the eve of the decisive match, Bubista declared that “everyone is entitled to dream and nothing is impossible.”
His players proved him right, writing one of the most memorable stories of the tournament and extending their fairytale run into the knockout rounds.
