RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has highlighted tree planting as one of the most effective natural solutions for mitigating high summer temperatures, citing its role in cooling urban areas, improving air quality and supporting environmental sustainability.

The ministry said trees help lower temperatures by providing shade, reducing heat absorption by roads and buildings, and releasing water vapor through transpiration, which cools the surrounding air. It added that a tree can absorb an average of 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.

Expanding green spaces also contributes to better public health by reducing stress, improving mental well-being, filtering air pollutants, lowering noise pollution and supporting rainwater management, while providing habitats for wildlife and natural pollinators, the ministry said.

It encouraged the public to plant native tree species, noting that they are better adapted to Saudi Arabia’s climate and require less water, improving the sustainability and success of afforestation projects.

The ministry also advised following proper irrigation practices during the summer, including watering trees early in the morning or late in the evening and using drip irrigation systems, which can reduce water loss through evaporation by up to 50% compared with traditional irrigation methods.

Applying organic mulch around trees also helps retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature and suppress weed growth, it added.

The ministry described tree planting as a long-term investment in the environment and future generations, stressing that community participation and environmentally responsible practices are essential to expanding vegetation cover, and protecting natural resources.
