RIYADH — Saudi Arabia said Tuesday that safeguarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a collective international responsibility, warning that the world is witnessing an unprecedented level of tension in the vital waterway.

Saudi Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel told the United Nations Security Council on Monday that recent developments in the Gulf reflect a serious escalation affecting a route critical not only to the region but to the global economy.

Al-Wasel stressed that any threat to freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz directly impacts energy markets, global supply chains, and international economic stability.

He reiterated Saudi Arabia’s call for the international community, particularly the Security Council, to explicitly condemn Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom since the start of the regional crisis and leading up to the ceasefire agreement.

The envoy also urged respect for state sovereignty, adherence to the principle of good neighborliness, and refraining from the use or threat of force.

Al-Wasel called for firm measures to address the Iranian violations and emphasized the need to secure maritime routes, especially those linked to energy, food, and medical supplies.

He expressed regret that the Security Council had failed to pass a resolution specifically addressing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, warning that threats to maritime navigation constitute a direct risk to international peace and security.

Saudi Arabia also condemned any actions or threats aimed at disrupting navigation in the Strait of Hormuz or endangering maritime security in Bab al-Mandab, stressing that freedom of navigation must be preserved in accordance with international maritime law.

Al-Wasel reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for international and regional efforts to end the conflict and reduce tensions, including mediation initiatives led by friendly and brotherly nations as well as United Nations efforts to reach a peaceful resolution.

He also voiced Saudi Arabia’s support for mediation efforts led by Pakistan aimed at achieving a lasting agreement that addresses the root causes of instability.

“The dialogue and diplomacy remain the only path to achieving sustainable security and stability,” Al-Wasel said.

He further called on Iran to comply with its international obligations and adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2817, which condemns threats to regional security and calls for the protection of international navigation.
