NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia has underscored the importance of strengthening international efforts to protect older persons, particularly those with disabilities, and ensuring their rights, dignity and full participation in society.

The call was made by Saudi Arabia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Abdulaziz Al-Wasel, speaking on behalf of the Group of Friends of Ageing and Sustainable Development during a side event held on the sidelines of the 19th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York.

Al-Wasel said the mistreatment of older persons is a global issue that requires a collective response, noting that abuse occurs in different forms across societies and demands greater international coordination and cooperation to prevent and address it.

He highlighted the growing intersection between ageing and disability, noting that about 46% of people aged 60 and above live with some form of disability.

With the world’s population ageing rapidly, he said governments and institutions must adopt more inclusive policies and programs that address the specific needs of older persons, particularly those with disabilities.

Al-Wasel noted that one in six older persons experiences some form of abuse, with risks increasing among people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.

He stressed the importance of addressing gaps in age- and disability-disaggregated data and statistics, while strengthening legal frameworks and national policies aimed at protecting older persons and preventing abuse.

The Saudi ambassador called for enhanced care and support services, stronger oversight of long-term care institutions, and improved reporting and protection mechanisms to safeguard the rights and dignity of older persons.

He emphasized the need to create safe and inclusive environments that enable older people to contribute actively to their communities.

Al-Wasel concluded by urging continued efforts to advance the goals of sustainable development, justice and equality while ensuring that no one is left behind.
