MOSCOW — A massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow and the surrounding region overnight killed two people and injured 20 others, Russian authorities said Sunday, as Ukraine confirmed carrying out long-range strikes targeting Russian energy and logistics infrastructure.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin described it as the “most massive” drone attack on the capital, claiming that more than 1,600 Ukrainian drones had been shot down since Saturday, including 450 approaching Moscow.

Sobyanin said several drones reached the Moscow Oil Refinery, damaging the facility, while another struck a residential building. No casualties were reported in the capital itself.

“The unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections. The adversary failed to achieve this,” Sobyanin said.

Moscow Region Gov. Andrey Vorobyov said civilian infrastructure was damaged and fires broke out across the region.

In the Ramensky district, a falling drone sparked a fire on the roof of a 21-story apartment building, forcing the evacuation of 400 people and damaging 20 vehicles.

A drone struck a three-story apartment building in Sofyino, killing one person and injuring five others, while another person was killed in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo district, Vorobyov said.

He later said the number of injured across the Moscow region had risen to 20, including three children, with 15 people hospitalized.

Russia’s Defense Ministry separately claimed that its forces intercepted and destroyed 1,110 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russia, annexed Crimea and the Black Sea, describing it as the largest attack since the beginning of the year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the strikes, saying Ukraine’s “long-range responses had a very significant impact in the Moscow region last night.”

He said Ukrainian forces struck one of Russia’s key oil industry and logistics facilities, describing such targets as sources of revenue sustaining Moscow’s war effort. Zelenskyy also said a facility in the Voronezh region was targeted.

The attack came as Russians voted on the final day of a three-day parliamentary election, alongside regional and local elections. More than 111 million people are eligible to vote, with all 450 seats in the State Duma being contested.

Zelenskyy said Saturday that he had approved new long-range strikes against Russia and that Ukraine was preparing to expand its long-range capabilities.
