The Quintet Group on Sudan, comprising the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Arab League, the European Union, and the United Nations, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a comprehensive Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process aimed at advancing prospects for sustainable peace in Sudan.
In a statement distributed by the General Secretariat of the Arab League, the group said that, as a follow-up to the Berlin Conference held last April, consultations were conducted in Addis Ababa from June 3 to 5 with a broad range of Sudanese political and civil stakeholders. The consultations explored possible mechanisms for establishing the proposed preparatory committee for a comprehensive Sudanese-Sudanese political dialogue.
The Quintet described the Addis Ababa consultations as challenging but productive, noting that Sudanese participants submitted written contributions and perspectives. It expressed confidence that the necessary groundwork for broader discussions involving various Sudanese groups is beginning to take shape.
The Quintet Group renewed its commitment to supporting the efforts of Sudanese stakeholders to advance a peaceful and inclusive political process. It also reaffirmed its full respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity and rejected any attempts to undermine these principles or impose parallel governance structures that could lead to further fragmentation of the state.
The group called on all influential parties to support de-escalation efforts and help create the conditions necessary for achieving a negotiated and lasting peace in Sudan.
