RIYADH — The Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) issued preemptive instructions for transit shipments at the Kingdom’s ports.

This is in view of the geopolitical developments in the region that have affected some maritime routes, and the resulting changes in the patterns of shipment flow, especially shipments arriving under the transit system at the Kingdom’s ports in preparation for their transfer to other destinations.

The Mawani affirmed that it is monitoring operational performance indicators at ports and is committed to maintaining smooth operations and efficient use of capacity. It also highlighted the potential consequences of goods remaining in ports for extended periods if transit shipments are not cleared within the specified timeframe.

Accordingly, the Mawani stressed the importance of ensuring that shipping lines and their agents take the necessary proactive measures to guarantee the timely transfer or transshipment of transit shipments, thus minimizing their stay in ports. It also emphasized the need to enhance coordination with relevant authorities to expedite procedures related to transit shipments, including advance planning for transshipment or transport to final destinations.

The authority stressed the importance of considering the operational implications of shipments remaining in ports beyond the legally mandated timeframes, including the potential application of applicable fees and charges. It reiterated the importance of shipping lines and their agents reviewing their operational plans and managing incoming transit shipments to ensure they do not remain in ports.
