Migratory birds are a vital indicator of environmental health and an important component of biodiversity. Saudi Arabia is committed to protecting wildlife, including migratory birds, which form an integral part of its ecological diversity. King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve is one of the Kingdom’s most important natural sites for birds, situated along major migration routes. The reserve encompasses five internationally recognized Important Bird Areas (IBAs) and a Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) designated according to international standards.
During migration seasons, the reserve hosts large and diverse numbers of migratory and wintering birds, which use its various habitats as resting points, feeding grounds, and sources of energy. The reserve features a wide range of natural habitats, including mountains, rocky cliffs, valleys, plains, farms, water bodies, wetlands, and rainwater catchment areas.
Coinciding with the autumn migration season, the reserve has highlighted on its social media platforms the importance of preserving migratory birds and their habitats due to their vital role in maintaining ecological balance, while raising awareness of their environmental roles in natural ecosystems and identifying the most prominent threats they face.
The reserve also emphasized its commitment to protecting migratory birds and enhancing environmental monitoring systems, in line with national and international strategies for biodiversity conservation. These efforts strengthen the Kingdom’s position in global efforts to protect migratory birds and their habitats.
