King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSH) in Jeddah has performed a complex robotic procedure on a 74 year old patient, combining a pancreaticoduodenectomy, known as the Whipple procedure, with a partial hepatectomy and reconstruction of the digestive and biliary pathways in a single operation to treat synchronous pancreatic and liver malignancies.

The patient presented with symptoms of cholangitis. Further investigations revealed a pancreatic head lesion causing biliary obstruction, along with a separate lesion in segment VI of the liver, prompting a multidisciplinary team to review the case and develop a precise surgical plan that accounted for its complexity and the patient’s underlying comorbidities.

The case is significant because synchronous pancreatic and liver malignancies are rare and highly complex, requiring surgery in sensitive anatomical areas, complex reconstruction, and careful planning to protect patient safety while achieving the intended therapeutic goals.

The robotic platform allowed the surgical team to complete the procedure in one operation without conversion to open surgery, supported by high definition three dimensional visualisation, advanced instrument control, and precise movement within narrow and complex anatomical spaces.

The medical team said the operation required close coordination among specialised teams, including hepatopancreatobiliary surgeons, anaesthesiologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, oncologists, pathologists, critical care specialists, nurses, and perioperative teams, ensuring precise surgical planning and integrated postoperative care.

The achievement highlights the growing role of robotic surgery in complex cancer care, where it can improve surgical precision, reduce surgical trauma and blood loss, support faster recovery, and shorten hospital stays compared with traditional open surgery in appropriately selected patients.

King Faisal Specialist Hospital has been ranked first in the Middle East and North Africa and 12th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centers for 2026 and recognized as the most valuable healthcare brand in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East according to Brand Finance 2026. It has also been listed by Newsweek among the World’s Best Hospitals 2026, the World’s Best Smart Hospitals 2026, and the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2026.
