More than 25 civilians killed in RSF attack in Sudan’s North Kordofan

KHARTOUM — More than 25 civilians were killed in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the Umm Badr area of Sudan’s North Kordofan state, the Sudan Doctors Network said Saturday.

The non-governmental medical group said a video circulating online showed RSF members executing civilians in the area.

The network said there were indications that the killings were carried out on ethnic grounds, with the victims accused of supporting the Sudanese army.

“The unlawful execution of civilians constitutes a grave crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights standards,” the network said.

It warned that targeting civilians based on their ethnic or social affiliation could threaten social cohesion and fuel hate speech and further violence.

The Sudan Doctors Network called on the United Nations and international human rights organizations to launch an independent investigation and hold those responsible accountable.

The reported killings come amid intensified fighting in North Kordofan, where the Sudanese army has recently made territorial gains against the RSF and announced that it had taken control of 11 areas.

Since late July, the army has seized large areas of North Kordofan after retaking the strategic city of Bara, as well as Jabra Al-Sheikh and Umm Siyala, and securing the main road linking Bara with Omdurman, west of Khartoum.

North, West and South Kordofan have witnessed clashes between the army and the RSF since last October.

Sudan has been engulfed in war between the army and the RSF since 2023, killing tens of thousands of people and displacing around 13 million, according to UN and international estimates.
