Samsung Electronics recently pledged to invest $1 billion in Helix Digital Infrastructure, an AI company established by investment firm KKR.
The South Korean company stated it would contribute $500 million, with the remainder coming from affiliate companies Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance.
Alongside Samsung, KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia and US power company Vistra are founding investors in Helix Digital Infrastructure.
The $1 billion adds to $10 billion in capital committed upon launch.
Helix Digital Infrastructure launched in June to deliver “integrated solutions” across the value chain, including hyperscale data centre development and operations, power generation, transmission, distribution infrastructure and fibre networks.
It states it can help hyperscalers rapidly secure the large-scale, comprehensive infrastructure required to keep pace with growing AI demands. It is led by former AWS CEO Adam Selipsky.
Samsung explained it is making the investment to ensure its affiliates are able to access a company with interests across several areas where they operate including semiconductors, construction, data centres, cloud computing and finance.
Moving forward, Samsung stated it is poised to expand its role from a traditional hardware component supplier to an “active architect of the global AI infrastructure ecosystem”.
