Data sovereignty, privacy and secure collaboration have become strategic priorities for governments and regulated organisations across the Middle East. Growing concerns around data residency and reliance on public cloud platforms are prompting enterprises to explore digital workplace solutions that provide greater control over sensitive information.

In this interview, Joe Dutka, Sales Engineer at Nextcloud; Aaron Martin, Sales Team Lead at Nextcloud; and Shahsin Shafeek PV, Product Manager at VAD Technologies, discuss Nextcloud’s open-source and modular architecture, its ability to operate on-premise and within air-gapped environments, and rising demand across the GCC.

What differentiates Nextcloud from traditional collaboration platforms, particularly for organisations with strict data sovereignty and security requirements?

Joe Dutka: Nextcloud is an open-source enterprise collaboration platform that can be deployed in any environment, giving organisations complete control over their data and supporting digital sovereignty at national, organisational and domain levels. Its modular architecture allows customers to deploy only the capabilities they require. Organisations can use Nextcloud for file collaboration, productivity applications, document editing, video conferencing and secure messaging. Each capability can be deployed independently or as part of an integrated digital workplace. Unlike traditional cloud-based collaboration platforms, Nextcloud can operate on-premise or within an organisation-controlled environment. Customers decide where their data resides, how it is managed and who can access it, making the platform particularly suitable for organisations with strict privacy, security and regulatory requirements.

What are you hearing from customers in the region, and which industries or use cases are driving the strongest demand for Nextcloud?

Aaron Martin: Nextcloud is experiencing strong interest across the GCC, particularly in the UAE’s public sector. Government organisations are placing greater emphasis on privacy, data sovereignty and maintaining control over sensitive information. Nextcloud’s ability to operate on-premise and within air-gapped environments makes it well suited to public-sector organisations and other regulated entities that cannot rely entirely on public cloud platforms. Demand is being driven by customers seeking secure collaboration capabilities while retaining full control over where their data is stored and processed.

From VAD Technologies’ perspective, what opportunities do you see for Nextcloud in the GCC, and how is VAD working with partners to take the solution to market?

Shahsin Shafeek PV: Nextcloud represents a strong opportunity across the GCC because organisations are actively seeking alternative ways to control, manage and determine the location of their data. Demand is particularly relevant among public-sector customers and organisations operating in regulated industries. VAD Technologies is focused on building a sustainable, partner-led business ecosystem around Nextcloud. Our role goes beyond distributing the solution. We identify suitable partners, strengthen their technical capabilities and provide the knowledge transfer needed to position, deploy and support the platform effectively. Cybersecurity is not limited to defensive technologies. Maintaining control over data, including where it resides and how it is managed, has become equally important. Nextcloud addresses this requirement by enabling organisations to build secure collaboration environments under their direct control.
