Ericsson and Saudi Arabian based Mobily recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to test AI applications across the operator’s radio access network. The signing is part of a wider strategy to move towards autonomous operations.

As part of the agreement the pair will explore distributed AI applications across RAN compute, radio and active antenna systems, alongside centralised AI use cases delivered through RAN applications on EIAP, Ericsson’s open network management and automation platform.

The partners explained combining distributed and centralised AI could improve network performance and customer experience while boosting automation and energy efficiency.

Greater network automation could also provide a platform for future AI-native services and digital experiences, including augmented reality, virtual reality, autonomous vehicles and physical AI.

For Mobily, the deal provides access to Ericsson’s EIAP ecosystem, which includes more than 100 rApps from members.

The operator will gain access to software development tools and an AI-powered rApp Developer Assistant, as well as a network of software vendors, developers and other partners that may provide applications addressing network requirements in Saudi Arabia.
