RIYADH — Saudi Arabia on Thursday welcomed the United States’ decision to begin procedures to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, where it has remained since 1979.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for the positive steps being taken by the Syrian government to strengthen the country’s security and stability, rebuild state institutions and fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people for a more stable and prosperous future.

U.S. President Donald Trump informed Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa of the decision during their meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said lifting the designation would unlock international trade and investment, give Syria a chance to rebuild, and open up a new chapter for the Syrian people.
